Fired Over Holocaust Joke 1
Live Updates

Tokyo 2020 is underway as over 600 Team USA athletes arrive in Japan for the Olympic Games. It was a bumpy start for the soccer team, who lost 0-3 to Sweden Wednesday, but the softball team had a strong start to their quest for a fourth gold medal after beating Italy 2-0 at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium Wednesday. Today, the softball team will return to the stadium for their second match against Canada.

Organisers remain determined to push ahead with the Games despite COVID-19 worries, athletes withdrawing and protests outside the stadium from locals. In the most recent disruption, the Opening Ceremony Director Kentaro Kobayashi has been dismissed after a holocaust joke he made in 1998.

Meanwhile, final preparations continue for tomorrow’s scaled-down opening ceremony, billed as “sobering” as opposed to “flashy” this year due to COVID restrictions.
