Amazon plans to hire 100 people to staff new corporate and tech posts the company is creating in Denver, the e-commerce giant announced Tuesday morning.
To accommodate that growth, the company that has raked in huge profits during the pandemic is also planning to move into 20,000 square feet of additional office space near Larimer Sqaure, according to a news release.
“These 100 new jobs will not only help to grow Amazon’s Denver Tech Hub, but will also support the burgeoning pool of talented tech workers here in Denver,” Dave Wood, the site lead for Amazon’s Denver tech hub operation, said in the news release. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with local leaders, investing in the local community and creating jobs and opportunities that will support the Denver economy and talent pool.”
The new positions will cover a wide range of Amazon’s business, including its retail, devices and Amazon Web Services arms, the news release said. Teams in Denver are already working on projects that include upgrading shopping through Amazon-branded devices and building out software used by health care customers.
Amazon is actually looking for around 230 office workers in Denver right now, according to Tuesday’s announcement. In addition to the 100 new posts, there are more than 130 open tech jobs in its Denver hub.
The announcement continues the steady pace of Amazon’s growth in the Denver metro area despite passing over the Mile High City in its second headquarters sweepstakes two years ago.
Last spring, Amazon announced it was moving into 98,000 square feet of office space at 1515 Wynkoop St. as it moved to more than double the size of it combined Denver-Boulder tech hub, growing its white-collar headcount to 750 workers up from 350 at the time. Tech and corporate jobs come in addition to the thousands of workers in its warehouse and distribution buildings scattered along the Front Range.
Amazon reported $5.2 billion in net income in the second quarter — April, May and June — of this year, double the $2.6 billion it made in the second quarter of 2019.
The growth in Denver is part of a 3,500-worker expansion across the company’s tech hub cities. Dallas, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego and New York will all see major hiring, according to the news release.
