The governors of Delaware and New Jersey announced Monday they will lift mask mandates for school districts beginning in March, leaving just over a dozen states and the District of Columbia with student mask requirements.
Delaware Governor John Carney said his state’s mask mandate for both private and public schools K-12 will end on March 31, while the statewide order for indoor masks will end at 8 a.m. Friday, Forbes reported. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is set to announce that students will no longer need to wear masks beginning the second week of March.
Only 13 states and the District of Columbia will still have mask mandates for schools. The states are Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Louisiana and Hawaii, according to the National Academy for State Health Policy.
Governors in New York, California and Connecticut will decide in the coming days whether to extend mask mandates in their states, Forbes said.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
