MSI, like almost all Chicago cultural institutions, closed in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic and has remained shuttered while the city and state brought down their infection rates through physical distancing, widespread stoppage of public activities and enforcement of public health common sense. Both Chicago and Illinois are now in Phase 4 of their 5-step reopening plans, although neither will enter the final phase until a COVID-19 vaccine or treatment is widely available.
