Chávez, who was also an actor, rose to fame in the 1960s and 70s with a series of folk-style songs that were many times directed at the government. He participated in the student-led Mexican Movement of 1968 and often promoted Mexican arts and popular traditions through his music, according to Mexico’s El Universal newspaper.
