SALT LAKE CITY, UT –Police from Salt Lake City were attempting to take a man into custody for a parole violation on the 27th.  During the encounter, police allege that the man armed himself with a firearm which resulted in them firing on the suspect, killing him.

The US Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Apprehension Team was attempting to take an unidentified man into custody when he produced a firearm in the area of 925 South Fayette Avenue.

Police advise that they were forced to open fire on the subject, killing him at the scene.

West Valley City Police Department advised the case is being handled by the US Marshals Service but has not released which agency was involved in the use of force.  Will Marcois, a person who was working in the area, said that he had heard some type of commotion and looked outside.

Marcois said that he watched as a man began running away from police officers down Fayette Avenue before the shots were fired.  Marcois said:

“He [suspect] ran, turned back towards the police and fired off the shots and the officers fired back.  To say chaos almost doesn’t cut it – I mean, it was crazy.  At least 30 squad cars and unmarked trucks rolled in.”

US Marshals Service Chief Deputy Brandon Hold said that officers had tracked the suspect down to that area and attempted to take him into custody.

“A K-9 unit was deployed, he brandished his firearm and was engaged by officers and was fatally wounded.”

Police identified the man who had shot at officers and was killed in the ensuing gun battle as 38-year-old Damien Evans from West Valley City.  Evans was wanted for absconding from the Utah Department of Corrections Adult Probation and Parole Division.

Protests were almost immediately planned after word of the fatal shooting spread.  Whether they intend to still show up after several citizen witnesses advised Evans, who was white, shot at officers first and they simply returned fire is unclear.

Detectives with the Police Department are searching for 33-year-old James Crutchfield, who is being sought for rape charges involving a child under 13.  Detectives believe that Crutchfield knows about the warrant and is trying to elude police.

He has a criminal history of domestic violence, theft and drug charges.

Police cannot release much information pertaining to the crime as it is sexual in nature and involves a juvenile.

Laws have been written in that manner to ensure that any information is not released which could somehow identify the victim in any sex crime as well as juvenile information when they are victims.

This case is one of many stories that have recently come out of the Cincinnati area.  Recently, LET reported on the death of a 17-year-old former cadet from the Cincinnati Police Department.  I

n the heartbreaking press release, they advised that Aurora McCarter, died after being shot in an illegal firearms sale.

In that case, McCarter and another male met with a 16-year-old to sell him a gun on Basset Road in East Price Hill.  During the transaction, for whatever reason, the buyer took hold of the gun and fired upon both people, striking McCarter.

She was rushed to the Mercy Health – Queen City Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

McCarter had been a member of the Cincinnati Police Department Summer Cadet Program where she had been a youth leader.  This program offered part-time pay for their members and taught them how to become a police officer, learning various topics from patrolling to radio procedures.

Cincinnati Police Officer Malynda Jordan, who works in the program, said McCarter did very well while she was involved in the program and was very well liked.

Jordan said:

“When I say she was a ray of sunshine and she would brighten up anyone’s day. She gained so many friendships – she could get along with anyone.  She could walk in the room and meet a new friend and it would seem like she’s known them forever.”

Officer Robert Pope, another member of the program, also commented:

“We look at all these kids like our own.  It’s a hard pill to swallow, you know, when someone has so much potential and they’re not able to spread their winds because some malice like this happened.”

Officer Carrie Hollyfield added:

“It was really tough.  You know, I broke down.  I was really upset, and you know, I still get upset, because she was such a good girl.  She truly was a good, good, girl.”

It is unknown how McCarter, someone who was such an important part of the youth cadet program in the police department, got mixed up in an illegal drug sale.

Police say that McCarter had resigned from the program in June, offering no reasons as to why.  She had also been listed as a missing/endangered person from the Golf Manner Police Department after she resigned.

Police did not release the name of the 16-year-old how is alleged to have shot McCarter, however, they were able to identify him and take him into custody.  The teenager was charged with aggravated murder.

Convicted Florida child molester gets out of jail again after allegedly severely injuring a baby

ORLANDO, FL – You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more despicable than a registered sex offender. Let alone one who’s now facing charges related to abusing a child.

Yet one such convicted sex offender from Orlando, Florida managed to make bond after allegedly severely injuring a baby.

Broken ribs, a blood blister on the ear, temporal swelling, a cut on the neck shaped like an oval and a fractured vertebra. Those were the registered injuries of a baby said to have been done by the hands of 23-year-old Chris Garcia.

Authorities started investigating Garcia back on Aug. 9 after police were informed by officials from AdventHealth Orlando that a baby had severe bruising on the face.

Medical staff later found that the injuries were far more than just bruising though, and an arrest affidavit for Garcia stated that the injuries required a copious amount of force to enact.

It’s suspected that these injuries were sustained over an extended period of time, with Garcia seemingly being involved with the baby’s mother. The suspect alleged that the injuries sustained by the baby were for innocent accidents, essentially.

When detectives spoke with the baby’s mother, she stated that Garcia had offered to bathe her baby. Later on, after the bath, she noticed some redness under the baby’s eye. Garcia was said to have brushed it off the result of an accident, when a baby bottle fell on the baby’s eye.

After Garcia fell asleep, the mother took her baby to the hospital after seeing the redness and subsequent bruising.

The arrest affidavit noted that one injury in particular could’ve resulted in the baby becoming paralyzed or worse:

“The fracture to the C3 vertebra with ligament damage and epidural hematoma was extremely alarming, due to this type of injury commonly causing paralysis and even death.”

When investigators were working the case, they detected that Garcia showed signs of “resentment and jealousy” towards the baby.

Furthermore, a phone call between Garcia and the mother from the hospital room phone was alleged to have captured Garcia telling the baby’s mother to fabricate stories regarding how the baby was so severely injured.

After securing the information from the phone call and other details from the investigation, police arrested Garcia on Aug. 21 on suspicion of aggravated child abuse.

However, Garcia has since bonded out.

What makes Garcia making bail so egregious is that detectives had specifically requested that no bond be considered for Garcia “due to the severity of this case, and Chris’ past history involving sexual offenses towards children.”

Garcia has quite the conviction list, with two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of a minor under the age of 12, one count of lewd and lascivious conduct with a victim under the age of 16, and lewd and lascivious exhibition with a victim under the age of 16.

And now this child molester has managed to make bond after allegedly abusing a baby.

Strange times that we’re living in.

Speaking of janky bond endeavors in Florida, a school teacher from Jacksonville alleged to have been involved in child pornography just had his bond reduced.

Second grade school teacher, Thomas Hazouri Jr., who is the son of Jacksonville City Council President and former Mayor Tommy Hazouri, just had his initial bond of $625,000 reduced to a mere $25,000.

Hazouri Jr. was recently arrested on 25 counts of possession of pornographic videos and photos of children.

According to the arrest affidavit, police performed a search of his home and confiscated hundreds of images of children being sexually exploited by adults.

Allegedly, the affidavit also said that there were accounts linked to Hazouri Jr. that contained “non-exploitative” photographs that appeared to have been taken in a Mayport Elementary School classroom, which is where he used to teach.

If released, Hazouri Jr. would be required to wear an ankle monitor, have absolutely zero contact with minors, and agree to not use the internet.

It seems that regardless of this disturbing crime, being the son of a political figure pays off.

Hazouri Jr.’s attorney, Hank Coxe, said he welcomed the court’s decision to reduce the initial bond amount. Coxe said in a statement:

“This afternoon in court, acknowledging that Judge Merdith Charbula was correct in setting the bail at $625,000 on what she was provided, the court learned additional information about Mr. Harzouri and appropriately reduced the bond to $25,000.”

After the arrest of Harzouri Jr., Duval County Schools Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene said in a statement:

“It is both alarming and disappointing to learn that one of our teachers is alleged to have exploited children through such abhorrent activities.”

She added:

“As soon as we learned of the investigation, we took immediate action to ensure he had no further interaction with any of our students. Like all educators and parents, our thoughts and empathy go out to all victims of any form of child abuse.”

She reiterated:

“This behavior should not exist anywhere, least of all among those individuals in the educational setting. This district will continue to cooperate with JSO and any other investigative agency and we will take appropriate action.”

Jacksonville attorney Jay Howell, the founder of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, weighed in on the situation. He said that this case is a strong reminder that teachers are just one group that needs extra scrutiny. He said:

“We just need extra vigilance at places where kids gather. Those particular populations are real important because they work with kids.”

According to reports, Hazouri Jr. has spent much of the last 15 years teaching second, fourth, and fifth grade students at Kernan Trail Elementary School. He also taught fourth grade at Englewood Elementary in the 2018-2019 academic year. Most recently, he was teaching second graders at Mayport Elementary.

Reportedly, investigators received a tip back in July from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that linked him to an email address used in the uploads of five illicit images.

Court records show that Hazouri Jr. is in the midst of foreclosure proceedings and is also being sued by a local credit union for more than $20,000 in unpaid credit card debt. He also had a prior criminal arrest in 2000 for possession of cannabis, but those charges were dropped.

In addition to being on the City Council and being a former mayor, Hazouri Jr.’s father also served as a state representative and was a Duval County School Board member from 2004-2012.

Hazouri Sr. told First Coast News:

“[I am] not going to comment on the media on something that’s a family matter.”
