(CNN) — A man who broke coronavirus quarantine and headed out in search of cheap cigarettes had to be rescued, “exhausted, shivering and lost,” from mountainous terrain in France.
The man, who has not been named, intended to drive from the French city of Perpignan over the border to La Jonquera, Spain, where cigarettes are cheaper. Finding his way blocked by checkpoints enforcing the nationwide stay-at-home order, he abandoned the car and continued the 20-mile journey on foot.
On the slopes of the Pyrenees, he got lost, fell into a stream and then became tangled in brambles. He ended up calling for help.
Rescuers located the man and evacuated him by helicopter. Back in Perpignan, he was fined 135 euros ($146) for breaking quarantine rules.
“We remind you once again: stay at home,” the French mountain rescue service wrote on a Facebook post.

In Hawaii, anyone traveling between the state’s islands must quarantine themselves for two weeks, and breaking that quarantine order could bring penalties of up to $5,000 in fines or a year in prison.
