This letter is in response to the article titled “Coronavirus: Two who distribute food, devices in Oakland school district test positive” (Eastbaytimes.com, April 17) about the two confirmed COVID-19 cases in Oakland’s School District Food distribution locations.
While I am glad to hear that Oakland is providing food for children during this difficult time, I do believe that more precautions need to be taken.
Many children and parents depend on distribution centers, as there is already a lack of access to food and food-shortage in stores. These distribution locations allow children to access food that they may otherwise not be able to access while they are not attending school in person.
These confirmed cases can have a detrimental effect on children accessing nutritional foods due to fear of exposure.
While the district is taking precautions, more needs to be done to ensure that all children have access to food.
