Adult day centers, where I focus much of my research, serve nearly 300,000 chronically ill and/or disabled adults across the United States. In New York state, which has been the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, day centers were told they needed to close with four hours’ notice, leaving little time to develop contingency plans for participants. The closures of these programs come at a time when food banks are drying up, registered nurses are in short supply, and professionals and paraprofessionals lack the personal protective equipment (PPE) required to do home visits.
