Two Denver police officers fired shots at a man they said was wielding a handgun and threatening people Wednesday evening in the area of West High School.

Officers were responding to reports of a man threatening people with a weapon after 5 p.m. in the area of 11th Avenue and Osage Street, said Division Chief Ron Thomas at a news conference.

The man was allegedly holding a handgun and threatening a group of people in a stopped car, potentially attempting to hijack the car, Thomas said.

When officers arrived, the man allegedly turned toward them in what Thomas said was a threatening manner. Officers confronted the man and gave him commands to drop his weapon, but he didn’t, Thomas said. The officers then fired the shots.

The man was transported to a hospital, but police have not released his condition. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Thomas said the investigation is ongoing and will be conducted with the Aurora Police Department.
