ALAMEDA COUNTY – For the second time in 24 hours, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office on Friday night announced the death of a staff member from complications related to COVID-19.
“It is with great sadness we can confirm that a professional non-sworn staff member of our agency has passed away this evening due to COVID-19 complications,” the sheriff’s office said in a tweet. “This is our second employee to pass away in the past 24 hours due to COVID-19.”

Additional details were not immediately available, but the sheriff’s office said more information would be released later.
On Thursday night, Deputy Oscar Rocha, 57, died from complications related to COVID-19, according to a sheriff’s spokesman. Rocha worked most of his 25-year career in either the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland or the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
At least 40 deputies and more than 100 inmates at the jail have tested positive for the disease in an ongoing outbreak.
