Coronavirus: Two more deaths bring Contra Costa County’s total to 11 1

Two more people in Contra Costa Country have died from coronavirus, including a resident of a nursing home in Orinda, pushing the county’s coronavirus death toll into double digits.

A spokesman for the Contra Costa Health Services Department said one of the two deaths was a resident of the Orinda Care Center, but didn’t know if the person died at the facility or at a local hospital. The spokesman didn’t have details about the second fatality.

Contra Costa County now has 11 fatalities from coronavirus, according to CCHSD, which put out its latest coronavirus figures on Saturday. The county also reported 21 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, for a countywide total of 530 confirmed cases.

Over the last week, Contra Costa County has seen the number of confirmed coronavirus cases rise by 174. So far, 6,938 county residents have been tested for coronavirus, and 37 patients are in area hospitals being treated for the virus.

The county reported its first coronavirus case on March 4, according to county health officials.

Among Contra Costa cities and towns, Richmond had the most confirmed cases on Saturday, with 50, according the latest figures from the CCHSD. Concord was close behind with 48 confirmed cases, while Pittsburg had 41 cases, Antioch reported 38 cases, Brentwood had 37 cases and Orinda had 32 cases

On Friday, the CCHSD said it would be setting up the county fairgrounds in Antioch for use as a COVID-19 treatment center, should the need arise. The county said the fairgrounds’ event center has capacity for 43 people, the site would be used for people who test positive for coronavirus but don’t need hospitalization.

There are approximately 1.15 million people who live in Contra Costa County who are under a stay-at-home order that is in effect until at least May 3.
