SAN JOSE — Air travel plummeted at San Jose International Airport during March, airport officials said, a brutal new indicator that highlights how the coronavirus woes have battered the Silicon Valley economy.
The number of individuals passing through TSA checkpoints at San Jose airport plunged by 62.5 percent during March compared with the same month in 2019, according to the air travel hub.
Even worse, it appeared that air travel continued to deteriorate further as March drew to a close.
On March 31, air travel tumbled 95.4 percent compared with the same day in March of 2019, according to figures released by San Jose International Airport spokesperson Demetria Machado.
The TSA checkpoint figures aren’t the airport’s official monthly statistics but can serve as a proxy that provides insight into travel activity trends.
Flight cancellations continue to hobble activity at all three of the Bay Area’s major airports, according to closely watched airline activity web pages.
