A person with a confirmed case of coronavirus died Thursday night at a Contra Costa County hospital, marking the first death in the county from COVID-19.
Health officials made the announcement early Friday morning. Through Thursday night, the county said it was treating 42 people with confirmed cases of coronavirus. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the county has risen from six on March 6
The patient who died was between 70 and 80 years old, and had a pre-existing health condition that created a higher risk, health officials said. The patient also had a history of recent overseas travel.
Health officials will discuss the situation at a news conference in Martinez later Friday morning.
