ONTHS after coronavirus began spreading in the Bay Area, and then throughout California, the state and county health departments are moving to lift restrictions that required all but essential workers to stay home. Workplace and school closures, bans on group gatherings, and strict social distancing rules designed to ‘bend the curve’ have had an impact. But as the shutdown eases, where do we stand?
The virus has spread to nearly every county in the state, infecting tens of thousands of people, and killing several thousand Californians since the first case was detected in the U.S. in late January.
The Bay Area News Group is collecting and analyzing data from local health departments in each of California’s 58 counties daily to track cases, deaths, testing, hospitalizations and other metrics that can help us understand how the virus is spreading, and whether we are controlling its deadly pace.
