Coronavirus: 3 test positive in Burlingame senior facility; 3 more quarantined 1

Three residents at a Bay Area senior-living facility have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus spreading rapidly around the U.S.

Atria Burlingame, located blocks from west shores of the San Francisco Bay, has suspended all nonessential visitation after three of its residents tested positive and another three were quarantined. All six have been hospitalized and are receiving medical care, the San Mateo County Public Health office confirmed.

There were nine more cases in San Mateo County on Thursday, increasing the total to 89. These were the first in the Bay Area to come at a senior-living facility, the same high-risk environment as the Life Care Center in Kirkland, Washington — the first epicenter of the outbreak in the U.S. — where 81 of its 120 residents tested positive and 34 have died. Near Los Angeles, one resident and two staff members at an assisted-living facility tested positive earlier this week.

Atria has put certain precautions in place, such as the limited visitation, as well as twice-daily temperatures checks for all of its residents. Atria operates more than 200 senior-living facilities in the U.S. It describes its Burlingame location as a “progressive senior living community for active adults,” with both assisted- and independent-living options.

According to a statement from vice president of care Mike Gentry, obtained by KRON, the first case at Atria was confirmed Sunday and the resident has been hospitalized since March 12. Two more residents began exhibiting symptoms over the weekend and also tested positive.

Another three are hospitalized and under quarantine, according to San Mateo County Public Health.
