Coping during COVID-19: Grateful late husband didn’t have to
live now 1

We asked readers to tell us how they’re coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we bring you more of their responses.

For 50 years, I sat across the kitchen table from my husband and we talked about our day as we ate dinner together. Sonny died in September 2018 from COPD. Since he’s been gone, I continue to sit across from “him” and share some of the blessings of my day.

I’m grateful he did not have to live through this COVID-19 pandemic. It would have been terrified for his fragile health and the fear that we would have to go to the ER, something we did six times during the last three months of his life.

I’m grateful we had time to prepare for his death. He constantly reassured me that I would not only go on without him but grow stronger in the process. Even during his final weeks of life, he was my strength, my cheerleader and my confidante.

And he was right — I have grown stronger and more self-reliant as I’ve learned how to live in the world as a single person. I have moments of loneliness during these days of sheltering in place. But I am comforted by the knowledge that I knew the true meaning of love for half a century.
