Classic ‘X-Men’ Animated Series Getting a Disney+ Revival

Classic ‘X-Men’ Animated Series Getting a Disney+
Revival 1

If you just started hearing the pulsing synth riff of the ’90s X-Men cartoon theme blaring out across the world, it’s because Marvel’s mutants are coming back to television!

The Wrap has reported that Disney+ has ordered a revival—not a reboot!—of the game-changing ’90s X-Men animated series currently titled X-Men ’97. As the title indicates, the animated series will pick up where the original series—which fans affectionately call X-Men ’92—left off when it went off the air in 1997.

An official announcement came via Disney+ as part of the platform’s massive Disney+ Day rollout of announcements. It confirms that the series will debut in 2023 and—and this is major—that it will be produced by Marvel Studios.

Not Marvel Animation or Marvel Television (which was folded into Marvel Studios). Marvel Studios, the same division that makes the MCU films and TV series—including the spectacular What If…?—will make their first ever X-Men series.

The new series will include a number of familiar voices from the original series’ voice cast, including Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Chris Potter (Gambit), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), and Alyson Court (Jubilee). There will also be a number of newcomers to the cast playing unknown characters. New additions include Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.

Fans will be happy to learn that the original creators of the animated series Eric and Julia Lewald as well as director Larry Houston will serve as consultants. X-Men ’97 will be headed up by EP and showrunner Beau DeMayo. Jake Castorena will act as supervising director. Charley Feldman will be the show’s supervising producer.
