The US surpassed 9 million cases of COVID-19 on Friday — with more than half a million of the infections tallied in just the past week.
The milestone came 282 days after the first case of the coronavirus was reported in the US, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Since then, about 228,439 Americans have died from the virus, although fatality rates are dropping.
On Thursday, the US reported a single-day record of 80,622 infections, according to NBC News. It was the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that more than 80,000 cases were reported in a single day, the outlet reported.
That came after 78,981 new confirmed cases were tallied nationwide Wednesday.
Some 20 states have reported more cases in the past week than at any time during the outbreak, the New York Times reported.
The global total number of coronavirus cases stands at around 44,860,000, with the US identifying the most infections, followed by India with 8,040,203 and Brazil with 5,468,270.
Per capita, the US has the ninth-highest number of deaths in the world, according to Statista.
