Sunnyvale’s Country Gourmet restaurant makes a COVID-19 era comeback

Sunnyvale’s popular Country Gourmet is back in business.

Fans of the restaurant that meshes a chef-driven, farm-to-table menu with a homey atmosphere had been fretting since mid-March, when the owners announced takeout and delivery during the coronavirus shutdown, then abruptly stopped operations.

“It was with a heavy heart that we decided to close Country Gourmet in March due to COVID-19 and financial instability. We weren’t sure that we would be back,” the owners, Julia and Rene Blom, wrote this weekend in an email to customers. “But over the course of the past few months, we have become even more determined to return to doing what we do best — serving our community.”

That means the Eggs Benedict served atop freshly baked buttermilk biscuits, the Almond Chicken Salad, the Hot California Coast Sandwich and the soups served with gluten-free cornbread are returning starting Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The Country Gourmet, established in 1986 by Victor and Ellie Martindale, was purchased in 2005 by the Bloms, who were former employees. They put an emphasis on making food with local, organic, free range and sustainable ingredients.

Because of the limited hours, the bistro will reopen with a streamlined menu. But, as in the past, they are seeking input and asking customers which favorite dishes they’d like to see offered again.
