Abundant evidence, much of it gathered by the government, makes clear that removing slaughter-line speed limits is a recipe for disaster for everyone involved except the corporations that will profit. Killing animals faster than ever — and we are talking about killing more than one animal per second in many cases — means that animals are violently hurried to their deaths, including through beatings, kicking, dragging, and electric shocks. It also means that, in the rush, they are more likely to not be properly stunned, and thus to still be conscious when their throats are slit and they are dropped into scalding hot tanks.
Slaughtering animals is not essential: Don’t use the coronavirus as an excuse to loosen meat-processing rules
