A Littleton resident who shot and killed a man armed with a gun Saturday night appears to have acted in self-defense, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

Stan Collins, 59, was killed after investigators believe he entered a home in the 9000 block of Fraser River Street around 6:15 p.m. Saturday and was shot to death by someone who lived in the home. The resident who killed Collins has not been publicly named and no charges have been filed.

Collins and the people who lived in the home knew each other, Deputy Cocha Heyden said, and there is no danger to the public. She could not say how they knew each other or if there was an ongoing dispute between the resident and Collins, but confirmed that Collins was armed with a gun.

“While this is still an open investigation and a few more interviews need to be conducted, it appears to be an incident of self-defense,” the sheriff’s office said in a tweet Sunday.
