The Karl Dorrell Era at CU finally has the green light to get underway.
Dorrell, the Buffs’ first-year football coach, tweeted late Thursday afternoon that CU was “1 Day away from starting the 2020 season!”
On Friday, that day arrives. And according to reports, that first practice has been approved to take place in Boulder County. CU announced practice plans submitted to the Boulder County Public Health department had been approved.
The county had issued an order on Sept. 24 that banned gatherings for 18-to-22-year-olds in Boulder because of the spread of coronavirus across CU’s Boulder campus. That ban expired Thursday at noon.
CU is slated to open a shortened regular season at home on Nov. 7 against UCLA, a program Dorrell coached from 2003-07. The Pac-12 announced a return-to-play plan the same day as Boulder announced its ban on gatherings.
Dorrell was hired Feb. 23 to replace Mel Tucker, who departed earlier in the month to take the head-coaching gig at Michigan State. The pandemic closed on-campus learning through the summer and canceling the scheduled spring practices.
The Buffs have yet to hold a fully-padded practice under their new coach. But that’s about to change.
