Donburi is a traditional Japanese dish made with a combination of fish, meat or vegetables osimmered together with a savory sauce — often curry — and served over rice. And thanks to rapid expansion from the folks at Oakland’s Kokolo Donburi, the rice bowls may be coming to a neighborhood near you.
Kokolo, which offers traditional donburi from regions throughout Japan — Wagyu Beef Curry, Stir-Fry Udon, Curry Tonkasu — is opening several new locations in the Bay Area by year’s end.
The casual eatery already serves its rice and noodles bowls in Alameda, Pleasanton and Berkeley, and this August is adding downtown Livermore, Walnut Creek (in the former Baja Fresh) and Fremont to its roster, followed by Richmond’s Pacific East Mall in October. Earlier this month, Kokolo unveiled a new Milpitas location at MacCarthy Ranch. And Sunnyvale is slated to open by January 2022.
The straight-forward menu features 14 bowls, including unique options like grilled eel, sea urchin and a vegetarian mushroom bowl, at $13 each, in addition to small plates such as gyoza, Japanese fried chicken, braised pork belly and hamachi kama, the tender grilled yellowtail collar. Small plates are under $12.
According to the Kokolo website, all locations will be opening this month, but check the restaurant’s Facebook page for updates.
