A 107-year-old Dutch woman is believed to be the oldest person in the world to ever recover from the coronavirus, according to a new report.
Cornelia Ras started feeling sick on March 18, a day after her 107th birthday, at her nursing home on Goeree-Overflakkee, an island of the Netherlands, Dutch newspaper AD reported.
Ras — along with 40 other residents — became infected after attending a church service, the outlet reported.
Ras had a fever just over 100 degrees and a cough, but she never got severely ill — leading her to doubt whether she in fact had the virus, her niece Maaike de Groot told the newspaper.
But she was tested along with the other residents, and her result came back positive, according to the report.
About two-and-a-half weeks later, on Monday, doctors told Ras she was virus-free.
“We did not expect her to survive this,” her niece Maaike de Groot told the newspaper, according to a translation by Metro UK. “She takes no medicines, still walks well and gets down on her knees every night to thank the Lord. From the looks of it, she will be able to continue to do so.”
Twelve people who attended the service with Ras have since died of the virus.
Other centenarian coronavirus survivors include William “Bill” Lapschies, an Oregon World War II veteran who just turned 104, and Ada Zanusso, 104, of Italy.
