The CSU Rams’ football team has resumed practicing. But 22 of those players have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement released by the university Wednesday.

The 22 football positives were among 36 reported by CSU on the last day of September, a list that includes seven from the women’s swimming and diving team, three from volleyball and two each from women’s basketball and soccer.

There were eight active COVID-19 cases among CSU student-athletes as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams’ football program is practicing while under investigation for alleged violations of university protocols regarding students, staff and coronavirus, and for accusations of abusive and racist language within the program.

A CSU spokesperson said football coach Steve Addazio, who was hired last December to replace Mike Bobo, will not be fielding questions from media until after the investigation is complete. No timetable for that completion has been announced.

The Rams are tentatively slated to open an abbreviated, eight-game football season Oct. 24.
