Coronavirus: Seven more deaths in San Mateo County 1

On the day after seven Bay Area jurisdictions extended a stay-at-home order because of the novel coronavirus, the latest numbers from San Mateo County health officials offered a reminder of its deadly power.

Seven more people were added to the death toll in the county’s latest report Tuesday morning. That brings the total in the county to 48 and marked the largest one-day increase since 11 were added on April 22.

That news came as the county joined Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties, as well as the city of Berkeley, in extending the stay-at-home order that was set to expire on May 3. Health officials have said the number of confirmed cases and people in hospitals must show a steady downward trend, and that testing must increase before it is likely to be lifted.

In San Mateo County, 1,099 people have been confirmed to be positive, and 19 people were added to that list by health officials Tuesday morning. They have added 28 people over the past two days.

Health officials also said 63 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, and that 20 of them were in intensive-care units. The county said it still had 55 beds available, as well as 224 ventilators.

In San Francisco, the death toll did not change — 23 people have died; the most recent one recorded on Monday — but the number of cases confirmed by health officials increased. An additional 41 people were diagnosed in the county, more than twice the number added to the list on Monday. The total since the pandemic started stands at 1,468 — 60 percent of them males.
