San Mateo County health officials on Thursday reported 30 new cases of the new coronavirus, bringing the countywide total to 195, the third-most in the Bay Area.
Across California, the total number of cases increased to more than 3,000 on Wednesday, with 1,200 in the Bay Area.
As testing becomes more widespread, the upward trend in the number of people infected with the potentially deadly virus is expected to continue. As of Tuesday, the state had conducted 66,800 tests but 48,600 results were still pending. Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state has a shipment of 150,000 more test kits on the way.
In New York, health officials have performed three times as many tests as in California, and the state’s number of cases is 10 times that of California.
On Wednesday, San Mateo County announced four additional deaths, bringing the countywide death toll to five. As of Wednesday, 67 people had died from the coronavirus in California, while more than 1,000 have across the U.S.
