Coronavirus: San Francisco reports 3 new deaths from COVID-19, nearly 800 cases 1

San Francisco on Friday added three to its death toll and reported the highest number of new cases of COVID-19 in the city in more than a week.

It capped a week of slow but steady growth in the number of tests in the city to come back positive. On Friday, that number grew to 797, a 10% increase — 73 new cases — from the previous day.

Information on the three new victims was not immediately available.

The number of hospitalizations from the coronavirus has remained flat around 90 this week, though the city has added 14 patients in intensive care units since last Friday, bringing that total to 56.

In an update to its demographic dashboard, the share of confirmed cases in the city among its Hispanic population spiked. The number of cases categorized as “unknown” fell from 32% to 27%, while Hispanic and Latinx cases now account for the largest share in the city, at 24%. They make up 15% of the city’s total population, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Nearly half the city’s confirmed cases — 45% — are in those under 40 years old. Nearly two-thirds — 63% — are under 50 years old.

The city has been reporting just over 300 test results per day for the past two weeks. If it remained on that pace, it should receive its 7,000th test result this weekend. So far, about 13% of tests are coming back positive.

The state went over 20,000 confirmed cases on Thursday, taking a week to double from 10,000 the previous Thursday. Even with a sharp rise Friday, San Francisco’s case count is rising slower than the statewide pace. It had 497 confirmed cases last Friday, 300 fewer than to end this week, meaning it grew by 60% in a week.

The three new fatalities in San Francisco bring the death toll across the Bay Area’s 10 counties to more than 120. Santa Clara (47), San Mateo (21) and Alameda (17) were the Bay Area counties to report more deaths from the virus. The region accounts for about 22% of the cases and deaths statewide, with the majority clustered in Southern California.
