Coronavirus: New cases, deaths continue to rise in San
Francisco, San Mateo County 1

There were more cases and new deaths in the Bay Area’s two early-reporting counties on Friday.

In San Francisco, health officials reported 38 new cases, bringing its total to 1,340, and the 22nd fatality in the city attributed to COVID-19. In San Mateo, the death toll grew by two to 41, while the county added another 23 confirmed cases for a total of 989. The number of cases in San Francisco has risen 16% since the week began, while San Mateo’s case count has grown 18%.

There were six new patients in intensive care units in San Francisco on Wednesday, the most recent day for which data was available, an increase of 22% from the previous day. In San Mateo, the number of patients in ICUs fell to its lowest level since Saturday, down to 17 from 21 on Tuesday. Overall, the number hospitalized in both counties remained flat, with 67 in San Mateo and 82 in San Francisco, two more than the day before.

Officials in San Francisco also discovered the second positive case at the Division Circle Navigation Center in the Mission District. The first positive test came three weeks ago, after which it underwent a deep cleaning and the city began prioritizing vulnerable guests at the facility for hotel rooms it has secured. Now, officials say the facility will temporarily close once all of its guests are transferred.

Casa Quezada, a permanent supportive housing building, and the Multi-Service Center South, the city’s largest homeless shelter, did not report any new cases Friday. There were 24 positive cases among 71 residents and staff at Casa Quezada, while 96 guests and 10 staff members have tested positive at MSC South.

All guests at MSC South were transferred and the facility underwent a deep cleaning before it reopened this week as a post-COVID shelter site for people experiencing homelessness who no longer need to quarantine or receive medical care.
