A Chicago police officer accidentally shot two other officers during a struggle with a suspect, authorities said.
The officers had spotted a car that was wanted in connection with a murder at around 9.15 p.m. on Wednesday, Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said during a media briefing.
The officers and a police helicopter followed the car until it stopped outside a Citgo on W. Ogden Avenue in Lyons.
Officers surrounded one suspect outside the gas station and a struggle ensured, Brown said.
During the struggle, one of the officers accidentally fired their weapon once, “lightly striking” two officers, he added.
The bullet went through the arm of one officer and into the shoulder of another, according to Brown.
They were transported to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Brown said, and appeared to be in “good condition.”
The shooting will be investigated by COPA and the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on desk duty during the investigation, Brown said.
The two suspects were taken into custody and a gun was recovered from the vehicle.
