When Gov. Cuomo ordered non-essential workers in the city to stay home this week, many of my colleagues were not sure where journalists fit into that directive. Of course, we’re allowed to continue working — but sadly, for too long the American news media has been so diminished, we’ve forgotten how essential we truly are. And while the president and officials in his administration have gone out of their way to discredit us, we’re partly responsible for our low standing.
