The MCC in Manhattan has had a host of issues in recent years, including overcrowding and inmate abuse by correction officers.

The facility was locked down for weeks in early March as authorities searched for a loaded gun that had been smuggled into the prison. Officials eventually found the weapon — and a cache of other contraband — in the prison after days of searching.
