Simple, simple, simple. I’ve carried these everywhere so I know the ins and outs and fully understand what they can and can’t do. For what they can do it’s definitely worth the price. Comes with a nifty built in flashlight. To use the flashlight press the MONI button below the PTT button. To get a steady strobe press the MONI button twice. If the signals are too weak you can hold down the MONI button to hear them better. I use CHIRP to program baofengs. Manually programming can lead to confusion if you’re not patient but manageable if you just relax and take your time. There are thousands of video/propaganda guides out there to program them. The batteries fit the entire UV5R series, even worked with the bf8hp. There are also a slew of accessories for you to choose from including larger capacity batteries, external antennas, charging cables, programming cables, auxiliary cables, protective cases and more. I use mine when I dont want to walk around with my $500 Kenwood if $300 Yaesu because if I damage it in the field beyond repair I can cut my losses and say “oh well it was only a 30$ baofeng”. My family and I are licensed amateurs and these make perfect radios for that emergency kit. Can they talk 1,000 miles? No not unless you have a high quality directional antenna and a huge expensive amplifier. If you want minimal signal travel/reception put on a stubby antenna. If you want longer signal travel go with a longer antenna. If you want mid range signal travel/ reception you can stick the included rubber duck. With these hand helds you need to remember HEIGHT IS MIGHT and LINE OF SIGHT. If you want to improve signal invest in good quality coax like LMR 400 and a base/mobile antenna for the bands these radios do. Get the antenna up as high as safely possible. 10 out of 10 for me. If you want to keep it simple and use voice only this is for you. These radios are made for transmitting in the amateur bands 2m 144-148 mhz and 70cm 430-448 mhz. DO NOT TRANSMIT if you are not licensed. You’ll need to acquire your Technician license from the FCC. Which is SUPER EASY. A 7 year old can do it. Can you? If you’re a licensed ham reading this , GREAT JOB!

These fit our needs. We wanted easy-to-find (in the Woods) bright-colored cases, inexpensive in the event we lose them in the woods, programmable UHF/VHF radios. Our other handy talkies are black and VHF-only, and one of those has ni-cad batteries so short-lived between charges. The Baofengs have lithium ion fast-charging batteries. We programmed the radios with separately purchased programming cable and downloaded software. EZ-PZ and really the only way to get full functionality. We so far have used them lightly a dozen times, no problems. Wish they didn’t have “flashlight” or “alarm” built in, less useful, mostly just annoying. Do our best to avoid triggering either fx. The “rubber duck” antenna included us just fine for our local use. We treat these small radios very carefully because their reputation doesn’t speak for hardiness, unlike our mil-spec handy-talkies. So far so good.

Works great as a first radio for a HAM. The stock rubber ducky antenna leaves a bit to be desired, but I was able to score a good deal on a medium-length & a long-length antenna. With the 15″ Nagoya N-771 antenna, I’m able to reach a repeater that’s about 30 miles away through semi-mountainous terrain – my transmissions aren’t super super clear, but they are readable.Programming with the keypad is a bit of pain the first few times, but you get used to it. Programming with a CHIRP was super easy. I will be upgrading to the 8-watt version in the near future for ARES use – this one will go into a 72-hr kit.

I purchased 2 of these radios, and found the radios themselves served their purpose. We used them very seldom, mainly around our property to assist with our landscaping, etc….. BOTH chargers’ wires soon frayed, one at both ends, the A/C plug end, and the charger end, the other at the charger end. So, I tried taping, etc., but the mil of the wire is so inferior, that we just don’t use them anymore. Junk. We are talking here, that there was minimal use of these chargers. The teeny wires just crack at the ends, exposing bare copper threads. I do have a Ham license, and I do know what I’m talking about.

Just received 3 of these and had my radio guy program them for my repeater. I’m using them for hunting. They are small enough to clip on your pack or vest yet not too small to feel comfortable in your hand. They do not feel cheaply made at all. One of my base chargers won’t charge unless I have the cable just right, other then that, I love these radios and will be buying more when I need them. I recommend these for sure.

I had this for a few months and I did not use other than to set up coms for training purposes 3times a month.. at first it seemed like an awesome buy for the money. But now the radio will not transmit sometimes and keeps keying on it’s own. I am not sure if it’s an issue of the transmit button or what but I am not happy at all. This could possibly just be a defective product that slipped past the quality control, or it could be issue from seller. But either way I would definitely not purchase again or recommend to anyone.

I have several members of a radio club that have these radios and they work just fine. I received this radio and the battery did not slide in to the back of the radio. The top part slide into the groove, but the bottom dangled 1/8 of an inch away from the base.

The range of this radio is not the good and the speaker sound is not much better. Don’t drop it the belt clip breaks easily. Upgrade the antenna for longer range.Easy to program. Easy to use. Easy to keep charged. The main unit is built pretty good and it’s not bad on water resistant.
