Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 2 (8 innings)
Sunday at Salt River Fields
On the mound: While new lefty Austin Gomber looked sharp in two scoreless innings of work, right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez was tagged for two runs on three hits in his first inning of spring. Trayce Thompson hit a long home run to left off Gonzalez and David Peralta smoked a double off the center-field wall. … Right-hander Jordan Sheffield, acquired from the Dodgers in December’s Rule 5 draft, pitched a 1-2-3 fourth and notched a strikeout.
At the plate: Josh Fuentes, who’s bidding for the starting job at first base, batted 2-for-2 and scored a run. … C.J. Cron, the designated hitter on Sunday, is another contender at first base. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, though he did a ball into deep right in his first at-bat. … Leading center-field candidate Garrett Hampson went 2-for-2 and drove in a run. … Starting third baseman Ryan McMahon ripped a double to lead off the fifth.
Worth noting: The new rules of spring training might have cost the Rockies a run in the first inning. The Diamondbacks “rolled over” the inning when starter Zac Gallen reached his pitch limit for the inning. Colorado had runners at first and second with two outs at the time.
