A federal grand jury in May indicted Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao for allegedly depriving Floyd of his rights while acting under government authority on May 25, 2020, when officers first crossed paths with 46-year-old Floyd in Minneapolis. They were responding at time to allegations that he used a phony $20 bill to purchase cigarettes at a nearby convenience store.
